| New title of Ženska infoteka! |
In the edition of the documentation book series from the international seminar Women and politics, Ženska infoteka published papers presented at the seminar in Dubrovnik 2007: Women and politics: Class differences in feminism
The title includes 5 papers presented at the seminar that Ženska infoteka organizes for the last 11 years in Dubrovnik in cooperation with the Heinrich Böll Foundation - Regional Office in Sarajevo and the Inter-University Centre.
The papers deal with problematic areas of the term feminism concerning the issue of class differences that gained importance during the transition, at the time when individualistic ideology of the personal responsibility for one owns personal social success marginalizes all group identities – beside the consumer groups – and the unequal possibilities are making it harder for a lot of people to gather around mutual interests. The central topic of the seminar was analyzed from the local view, but also with a wider context trough the papers from Chile and from Turkey, so that the documentation book is published in English and Croatian, in order to bring the conclusions of the seminar to a wider readership. Like everybody else, we are also haunted by the elections these days. But, fortunatelly, there is life after the elections, so that we hope that the topics of this issue will help that the feminist politics, as also the women politics will be bether understood in the croatian society, and among ourselves. The issue contains interviews with Bojana Genov, the coordinator of Croatian womans web, then with Mirjana Ferić Vac, the member and candidate of the SDP on the elections, and with Vesna Pusić, the president of HNS. Beside that, as adition to the issue, we published the report of the state of human rights in Croatia for the year 2006. There are, further, book reviews and itinerary.

31st issue of magazine »Bread and Roses«, under the title Key Words: festival, women, feminism, queer gathered documentation on Croatian FemFest and feminist and queer festivals of the region. We published Alenka Spacal’s paper »Feminism Opposite the ‘Eternal Female’« which contains an analysis of the relation of the category ‘feminist’, which she understands as a political category, opposed to the category of ‘female’, which she understands as essentialist. The basic thesis of Đurđa Knežević in her text »From Feminism to Feminism – Two Steps Back, One Step Forward, or: Feminists Facing Retirement« is that the first feminist wave had a subversive charge, contrary to the second wave, which has lost a critical theoretical (and political) position. Marina Butorac, Tanja Ratković, Ana Jelušić and Lea Jurišić presented last year’s FemFest. After that we have presentations of festivals from Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia – Rdeče zore, Pitchwise and Queer Beograd, review of a book Gracia Mendes’ Long Journey by Marija Geiger and account of Darija Žilić – »The Mine«. Alice Schwarzer: Simone de Beauvoir – Rebellin und Wegbereiterin
Alice Schwarzer recorded in the book Simone de Beauvoir. Rebellin und Wegbereiterin the conversations she had had with Simone de Beauvoir in the period from 1972 till 1982. From then on these conversations have become worldwide known and widely discussed. They represent the key to the understanding of the political/feminist efforts in the work and lives of these two authors. Simone de Beauvoir is the role model of the modern, engaged woman intellectual. In the post war era of the welfare state, she was a radical philosopher in the spirit of existentialism. She has disclosed the image of woman in biology, in the theory of psychoanalysis, in the historical materialism, studied the modern gender roles and had set freedom, right to self-determination and equality as the fundaments of all values. Her classic book "The other gender" is a must for the feminist readership of the 20th century.
In this book Alice Schwarzer demonstrates the significance of de Beauvoir for the modern social theory and praxis. The conversations between two women are characterized by an unusually frank tone – especially bearing in mind that de Beauvoir was known as very timid and fragile person. This openness was made possible by their relationship: Alice Schwarzer was a friend and a companion in political deliberations. The questions they have opened in these conversations – identity, power, men, children, and politics - are still increasingly important.
Until today the book has been translated into 8 languages: English, French, Spanish, Dutch, Danish, Turkish, Persian and Japanese. This shows how important it is for the history of women's movement as well as for the conception of the social movements after the year 1968 - in which Simone de Beauvoir had played an important intellectual role, together with her life companion, Jean Paul Sartre.
The book is a testimony of the great writer, philosopher and, of course, feminist, but also a guidepost in the issues such as freedom, human rights, emancipation etc. In the amalgam of processes known as globalization, the deliberations of de Beauvoir are coming back to haunt us. Her existentialist thesis on human freedom and her intellectual contributions to the international women's movement are as interesting and as relevant today as they were 30 years ago.
The book was edited by Đurđa Knežević. More >>

Seminar „Women and Politics“ – Class Differences in Feminism
17th – 19th May 2007 in Dubrovnik |
in cooperation with Heinrich Böll Foundation and Inter University Center Dubrovnik
A practical change of women's position in society requires action based on the understanding of the given power relations, domination and (re)production of social roles. The seminar 'Women and Politics' came out of the need for empirically founded analyses of social phenomena significant for women's position, as well as for the discussion grounded in such analysis.
Ženska infoteka, an institution that systematically works on collecting and disseminating documentation and information regarding women, and at the same time cooperates with the network of activist women’s non-governmental organizations, has chosen a thematic “Women and Politics” for a main pillar of the multiyear project of international conferences and seminar discussions. The term 'politics' is used in its wider sense - we regard as politics all spheres of social life in which women appear (or not). As our aim is to provide a comprehension needed for effective social change, the seminar is designed as a working session of female scientists, researches, politically engaged intellectuals and activists. Each year seminar deals with a different aspect of social life, which is relevant from the feminist perspective. The title for this year is 'Class Differences in Feminism'
In the last two decades, the issue of class differences in feminism has been raised by the feminists coming from the Third World countries (Spivak, Jajawardena, Ray etc.). This discussion emerged as a result of the intensification of the processes of globalization (followed by unwelcome repercussions) on economical and political levels. European feminisms (both Western and Eastern) did not have this topic on their agenda for many reasons, above all, because feminism itself was (its vast majority) rooted in intellectual, thus middle class, social background. With the political changes after the fall of the so called communism/socialism, the situation has changed and we can notice class differences in feminism either within national scopes or in the relations between Eastern European feminism and feminism of "The Old Europe" (Western).
In sociology, the term ‘class’ has always had strictly economic connotations. Due to its Marxist origin it has become a rather unpopular term during the 90’s. It is still wildly used in its broader meaning, as category, or a group with distinctive characteristics. Class in this sense is convenient as a subject of our topic because it allows us not to omit any social category, which may turn out to have a considerable impact on the social reality. However, political and cultural changes across Europe are induced by the demands from the sphere of economics. Therefore it seems to be wise not to let go the narrower, Marxist and Weberian, meaning of the term too easily.
The fact is that the political left and the civil society have nowadays lost themselves and need to be redefined. For the feminist movement, this implies that different means and, to a lesser amount, aims, existing together under the joint name of the feminist movement, must be put within the frame of the current economic and political constellation. In this post-transitional moment, in time of the growing new world order, when goals, strategies and allies have to be articulated a-new, it is important to understand the social categories accountable for the differences within feminist approaches.
During the 11th seminar 'Women and Politics' we intend to explore the ways in which the existence of the differences - in employment and type of economic sector, economic power, social status, type and degree of education etc. - among feminists, influence the access to knowledge and social power to women as a group in its own right.
We seek to address the issues like:
Which are the different feminist approaches relevant in the Eastern Europe today? Which differences in priorities and understanding of appropriate measures that need to be undertaken divide the feminist movement?
To what extent do these differences emerge as a result of the different social backgrounds?
Which of the social categories play the most important role in formation of the different feminist approaches?
How is the feminist struggle influenced by the fact that one belongs to more than just one social category and that these categories intersect and produce complicated loops of privileged and deprived groups? Which of the marginalized groups and elites (with female members) are tend to develop their particular interests, leading to divergence of interests and mutual misunderstanding among feminists? On the opposite, in what situations does this divergence of membership expend the access to knowledge, power and wealth for women?
To what extent is the division on the academic, professional activist and grass-root activist feminism becoming rigid, and why? On the opposite, in which fields do they successfully complement one another, and why?
WE INVITE YOU to submit your contribution to the discussion centred on these questions (minimum 10 pages) on the email address of Ženska infoteka:
zinfo@zamir.net
Please include in the application the name of your organisation and/or your fields of interest.
The seminar is orientated toward researchers/scientists and activists from the Eastern Europe engaged with feminism and human rights of women, but it is open for all interested to give a contribution to the discussion.
The criteria for the selection of the participants will be the following:
1.Is the received paper concerned with the proposed topic?
2.Scientific argumentation of the thesis
3.A striving to cover the different approaches to the topic
If you are interested to participate, please contact us as soon as possible as we could proceed with the organisation of the seminar.
